It can take a lot of physical and mental energy to tackle a good spring clean, so here we've got some easy-to-follow tips on how to get yourself started!
Spring cleans are no easy task, and many of us struggle to find the time. There are lots of benefits to a good hearty spring clean, though - not only does it get everything looking a lot cleaner and tidier, but it’s also a great opportunity to clear some space in your home. Of course, everyone does spring cleaning differently, and have their own ideas on what to focus on, so this week at Loft Leg, we’re giving you some general easy tips on getting started!
1. Create a cleaning schedule for yourself
Unquestionably, one of the hardest things about spring cleaning is simply getting started on it all. In busy family homes it can often feel like you’re in a running battle to get everything clean and tidy, especially since the rooms you’re trying to tackle are often in constant use throughout the day. The sheer scale of the task, therefore, can sometimes be enough to put off even the most determined of us. Thankfully, drawing up a schedule can be a surprisingly easy way to get a mental handle on it all, breaking up your home into manageable chunks. It’s a good idea to divide by room at the very least - so taking a single weekend to tackle the bedrooms, then another one for the kitchen and living room, for example. Even better, you can give yourself set tasks you want to achieve in each room, so if you get interrupted, you’ve at least got a clear sense of progress in what you’ve achieved. It can be easy to get discouraged otherwise!
2. Classify your cutter
This is perhaps one of the most important points, as properly categorising everything is going to help you decide what to keep, and what to throw away. You can start by bundling everything into separate baskets or boxes, clearly marked with definitive actions like Keep, Sell, Charitable Donation, Recycle, or Dispose Of. Once you’ve put your belongings into those containers, make sure you take those actions as soon as possible. For example, if things are going to charity, make sure they get there before the shops close. The longer you have these items hanging around, the longer they’ll weigh on your conscience, and ultimately the harder it’ll be to get rid of them.
3. Consider permanent storage
There may well be some things which don’t fit neatly into the above categories, such as Christmas decorations and holiday equipment like skis, lilos or suitcases. For occasional use items like this, it’s worth thinking about how and where you’re going to store them for all the months of the year that you’re not using them. For the larger items which require bigger boxes your loft is the perfect space for this, as it’s one of the most under-utilised areas in most people’s homes.
That’s where we come in here at Loft Leg. We’ve designed our products to help you make the most of this underused space. First and foremost, our flagship Loft Leg provides excellent support to create a stable surface in your loft, strong enough to walk on and store your occasional use items without compressing your existing insulation. Alongside this, if you’re even more pressed for space, you can use Loft Ledge in tandem to create additional shelving between the trusses in your loft, expanding your available storage space even further.
4. Clean from top to bottom
Once you’ve tidied and your rooms are clear from unnecessary clutter you have the freedom to clean. As the saying goes, you’ll want to clean from the ceiling down. Doing it the other way around means that you run the risk of scattering dust and debris down onto surfaces you’ve spent ages polishing. So, it’s best to start by removing any cobwebs, washing walls and cleaning windows, before then moving down to skirting boards and vacuuming. We won’t suggest how long to spend on it - that’s really up to you!
Lots of our customers are DIY enthusiasts who are quite confident with installing our products themselves - but if you’re not one of them, don’t worry! Here at Loft Leg we’ve got a nationwide network of installers who can install your purchases for you with no problem, leaving you free to enjoy the benefits with none of the stress or worry of tackling a job you’re not completely confident on.
